The International Education Symposium is Back
August 2-6, 2017 • University of Maryland, College Park, USA
This August 2-6, join barbershoppers around the world as we jet set back to the future.
Lace up your Nikes, hop into the DeLorean and see into the visionary future and expanding reach of a cappella four-part harmony. Sweet Adelines International has a phenomenal line up with fresh, new and comprehensive curriculum that draws from the best and most popular components of IES from the past. Master the principles of barbershop harmony and expand vocal harmony into the 21st century with hundreds of a cappella barbershop ladies and gents around the world. The way we see it, the future sure looks bright.
Widely regarded as the “father of contemporary a cappella,” Deke Sharon is the art form's most prolific arranger, having arranged more than 2,000 songs. Deke is the mastermind of "The Sing Off," "Pitch Perfect" movies and Broadway’s first a cappella musical, “In Transit,” — you don't want to miss class with this guy. Deke will be leading IES's Music in the Morning, teaching classes on the history and heart of a cappella, and emceeing the Rising Star and Mixed Harmony Quartet Contests.
Author of "Choral Charisma: Singing with Expression", Tom Carter has been coaching singers for 30 years. As stage director and acting teacher, Tom empowers singers to engage themselves and their audiences more fully. Tom shines a light on behaviors we use in our everyday lives and will help you apply them to your singing, maximizing the connection between you and your audience. If you want a fun, powerful, and transformative route to "authentic expression," check out Tom's workshops.
Sweet Adelines’ longest-standing active international champion quartet, “the BUZZ”, will lead a Breakthrough Acceleration Boot Camp during IES 2017.
Crowned in 2004, “the BUZZ” joins only a handful of other quartets who have won the first time they sang together at the international level. Recap: These ladies got it goin on.
Their boot camp will focus on topics such as performance, effective rehearsals, conquering stage fright and much more. It’s perfect for full quartets, individual quartet members or those who are interested in quartetting. You won’t want to miss their insight and vocal verve!
That's right! The 2017 world champion is headed back to the future. FRENZY has a combined 72 years in Sweet Adelines International and are three-time winners of the Most Entertaining Quartet title. The women have sung in 16 Sweet Adelines competing quartets and placed among the top 10 in the international quartet competition an astounding 35 times. We, too, are clapping while reading this.
Learn the secrets behind “Frenzifying” from Melissa Pope, tenor; Nikki Blackmer, lead; Anne Downton, baritone; and Judy Pozsgay, bass.
